Terms of service
Last updated: 2026-05-17
These terms apply when you order knife sharpening from SharpenIt ("we", "us") via this website. By placing an order you agree to them.
Nothing in these terms limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. If anything below conflicts with your statutory consumer rights, the consumer law wins.
1. The service
We sharpen knives on a slow-turning, water-cooled wheel with a consistent-angle jig, finished by hand on a leather honing wheel with polishing compound. Two delivery options:
- Mail-in — available Australia-wide. We post you a prepaid return satchel; you post your knives back to the workshop. The flat shipping fee covers both legs.
- Pickup — Arcadia Vale and nearby Lake Macquarie postcodes (2280–2285), 5-knife minimum, $25 flat fee. We collect and return.
2. What we sharpen — and what we don't
We sharpen kitchen knives (chef's, santoku, paring, utility), cleavers, machetes, axes, kitchen scissors, Japanese single-bevel, ceramic, and exotic-steel knives. Tier pricing is shown on the order form.
We do not sharpen bread knives or serrated edges. Re-cutting serrations needs a different rig than ours, and we'd rather decline than do a half-job. If you've sent us a bread knife in error, we'll contact you to refund that line and return the knife untouched.
If a knife you've sent doesn't match the tier you selected, we'll contact you before sharpening. Either we adjust and you pay the difference, or we return it untouched and refund.
3. Pricing & payment
- All prices are in Australian dollars and shown on the order form before checkout.
- Payment is upfront. We do not start any work until payment has cleared.
- Payment is processed by Square. We accept all cards Square accepts (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) plus Apple Pay and Google Pay.
- We don't accept cash on collection or COD.
4. Turnaround time
Indicative timing — not a guarantee:
- Mail-in: typically about 2 weeks end-to-end. Most of that is Australia Post; once your knives are at the workshop, sharpening is usually 1–2 business days.
- Pickup: typically 2–4 days end-to-end.
Australia Post delays, public holidays, or unusually large orders can add time. We'll keep you informed if anything looks like slipping.
5. No-fix-no-fee guarantee
If your knife doesn't come back sharper than the day you bought it, we'll redo it free. If after a redo it still isn't right, we'll fully refund the sharpening fee for that knife.
To claim, email hello@sharpenit.com.au within 14 days of receiving your knives back, with a brief description of the issue and a photo of the edge if possible.
6. Cancellations & refunds
- Before we've started work — full refund, no questions. Email us as soon as possible.
- After we've started but before the knives leave the workshop — refund of the unfulfilled portion, less the actual return-shipping cost if applicable.
- After fulfilment — covered by the no-fix-no-fee guarantee in §5.
- Refunds are issued via Square back to the original card, typically within 5 business days.
7. Damaged or lost parcels
We photograph every knife on receipt. If something arrives damaged, we'll tell you before we touch it and offer a refund or repair where possible.
If a parcel is lost in transit, we'll work with Australia Post on a claim. Where the loss is on the return leg (knives going back to you), we cover the postage to re-ship; replacement value of the knives themselves is subject to Australia Post's compensation limits and any extra cover purchased.
8. Your responsibilities
- Pack your knives safely. The padded satchel we send includes a packing sleeve — use it.
- Provide an accurate return address. We're not liable for parcels lost because the address was wrong.
- Knives must be legal to own and post in your state. Some flick knives, daggers, and similar items are restricted; the order is your declaration that yours aren't.
- Don't ship knives via untraceable post if avoidable — get a tracking number when you drop the satchel off.
9. Liability
To the extent permitted by law, our liability for any single knife is capped at the lesser of (a) the sharpening fee paid for that knife, plus (b) the documented replacement cost of the knife itself if we have caused damage that renders it unusable. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses (lost income, lost opportunity, etc.).
This clause does not limit non-excludable consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law.
10. Affiliate & referral codes
If you have a referral code from another customer, you get the discount shown on the code; the referring customer earns a commission on your order. You can't use your own auto-generated referral code on your own orders. Codes can be deactivated at our discretion if abused.
11. Privacy
Personal information you give us is handled per our privacy policy.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The version that applies to your order is the version in force on the day you placed it.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia. Any disputes that can't be resolved by talking it out are subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of New South Wales.
